🛒 Buying a club mid-season

You can become a Footium club owner during a season, but it is important to understand what you are taking on. A club is not just a badge. It has a league position, fixtures, players, FC, facilities, possible coaching sessions, and registration constraints already in motion.

This guide explains the main things to check before buying or upgrading into ownership mid-season.

Ownership and access

Everyone can start Footium as a Caretaker Manager for free by signing up, choosing from four available clubs and playing immediately. Caretakers can upgrade to full ownership at any time by card payment. No crypto wallet is needed.

Ownership unlocks permanent club ownership, academy access, transfer market access, full rewards eligibility and long-term club progression. Store bundles can change from season to season, so always check the current store before buying.

If you buy a club rather than simply continuing as a caretaker, remember that club-linked resources travel with the club. FC is tied to the club, cannot be traded or used outside Footium, and goes with the club if it is sold. Coaching sessions are also permanently attached to the club that purchased them and remain with the club after sale. They do not expire at season rollover.

Check the squad immediately

A mid-season club may already have injuries, suspensions, tired players, retiring players or players in training. Before your next match, check the Players page and tactics screen.

Look for:

  • Injured players, shown with an injury icon
  • Suspended players, shown with a red card icon
  • Players one yellow away from suspension, shown with an orange card icon
  • Players in training, shown with a green cone
  • Retiring players, shown with a yellow calendar at age 31
  • Missing or weak positions in the line-up

Players retire at 32, with their final playing season at 31. If the club relies heavily on 31-year-olds, you may still compete this season, but you will need replacements for next season.

Understand registration limits

Mid-season squad changes depend on registration status. The unlimited registration window closes at kick-off on Game Day 1. After that, you can still buy and sell players, but registered players may not be immediately usable by a buyer.

Free agents, meaning unregistered players, can be registered at any time. If you need instant cover after buying a club, search the Transfer Market for unregistered players. During the season, the market automatically defaults to showing free agents.

There are also two limited transfer windows each season. In each limited window, a club can unregister up to 3 players. This can help you reshape the squad, sell players as immediately usable free agents, or move players between clubs you own.

If you buy a registered player during a closed or limited window, they may remain at their previous club until the next unlimited window unless they are unregistered. Always check the in-game registration status before buying.

Check condition and match readiness

Footium seasons run across 22 matches, with one match per day during the season. Condition management is vital. Players lose condition during matches based on position, stamina and mentality. Training also costs condition, and players do not recover condition while training.

Any player finishing a match or training at or below 65% condition has a chance of receiving a 50-hour injury. Players cannot play, train or recover condition while injured. If your new club has been using a small squad heavily, you may need to rotate or sign free agents quickly.

Rewards and activity

Club owners are not automatically eligible for rewards. A club must be active during the season. Active actions include setting a line-up, signing an academy player, registering a player, making a live match change, or training a player.

Real-money reward eligibility is based on final league position and the owner of the club at a time between the end of the last game of the season and the season transition. Exact timings are communicated in advance. Rewards are tied to a wallet, not to a club, and become claimable at the start of the next season.

If you buy late in the season, check announcements and Discord carefully so you understand reward timing and eligibility.

First actions after buying

Set a valid line-up, check injuries and suspensions, review registration status, claim any daily FC available, inspect academy and training options, and decide whether you need free agent cover. A mid-season purchase can still be successful, but your first job is stabilising the squad you have inherited.
